The best chocolate smoothie bowl tastes like it should not be allowed before noon — dense, cold, and close to a frozen chocolate mousse in texture. Blender versions tend to be either too thin to take a topping or so gritty that the cocoa reads as sand. The CREAMi fixes the texture by churning the frozen base with a paddle, which turns a rough blend into a smooth spoonable mass. This one is banana-led so it needs no added sugar, with cocoa for depth, oats for body, and a scoop of whey for nineteen grams of protein. Keep a little extra milk on hand, because the paddle will need it.

Steps
Blend the frozen banana, Greek yogurt, cocoa, milk, oat flour, honey, and salt until completely smooth. Stop once the base coats the back of a spoon and no cocoa flecks remain.
Pour into the CREAMi pint up to the max-fill line, level the surface, and freeze upright on a level shelf for the full 24 hours. A smoothie base freezes through faster than a custard, but the level 24-hour freeze is what makes it spin smooth rather than in patches.
- Spin: SMOOTHIE BOWL
Process on SMOOTHIE BOWL. Without that program, LITE ICE CREAM is the right substitute for this dense cocoa-and-yogurt base.
- Spin: RE-SPIN
Scrape the walls down. If the texture is dry or crumbly, add 2 tbsp of milk and RE-SPIN once until it turns smooth and scoopable.
Serve immediately, topped with granola, a few banana slices, and a drizzle of nut butter.
If it comes out crumbly: respin
If the first spin comes out crumbly or too thick to scoop, scrape the walls down, add 2 tbsp of milk, and RE-SPIN once. Banana-and-cocoa bases freeze firm and almost always want one respin with liquid to loosen up.
Still icy after the respin? The icy-fix guide has all seven fixes.
Scaling to your machine
For the 24 oz Deluxe tub (NC501), multiply every ingredient by 1.5 and spin on SMOOTHIE BOWL — the Deluxe keeps every program the regular machine has, so use the same one. For Scoop & Swirl (NC701), the same base spins on SMOOTHIE BOWL; skip SWIRL, since the bowl is meant to be eaten thick at once.
FAQ
Does a chocolate smoothie bowl taste like a healthy dessert?
It tastes like cold chocolate mousse spooned from a freezer, which is the goal. The banana carries the sweetness, the cocoa carries the depth, and the yogurt adds a tang that keeps it from being cloying before noon.
Can I add protein powder to this?
It already carries 21g from yogurt, oats, and milk. Adding a scoop of chocolate whey in place of half the cocoa takes it to roughly 30g, but protein powders freeze harder, so add a full 2 tbsp of extra milk and plan on the respin.
Why is my smoothie bowl icy instead of smooth?
Either the base had too much water, or it was spun straight from a very cold freezer. The fix is the same as any other CREAMi pint: let it rest 10 minutes at room temperature, then RE-SPIN, adding a tablespoon of milk if it looks dry.
Can I prep the base the night before?
Yes — blend and freeze it the evening before, then spin it in the morning. Smoothie-bowl bases keep beautifully in the frozen pint for a week, and an overnight freeze comfortably clears the 24-hour minimum.
