A smoothie bowl is a drinkable smoothie that has been engineered to stop being drinkable — thick enough to hold a topping in place and eat with a spoon. Blenders do this with frozen fruit alone and usually produce something gritty, because nothing binds the shavings. The CREAMi does it better: freeze the blended base, then let the paddle churn it into a smooth, spoonable mass. This vanilla version is banana-led, sweetened by the fruit, and held together with a spoon of oats for body. Seventeen grams of protein, and the right amount of thickness to carry a handful of granola without drowning it.

Steps

  1. Blend the frozen banana, Greek yogurt, milk, oat flour, vanilla, and salt until completely smooth, with no visible pieces of banana left. The blend should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon before it ever sees the freezer.

  2. Pour into the CREAMi pint up to the max-fill line, level the surface, and freeze upright on a level shelf for the full 24 hours. A smoothie-bowl base freezes through faster than a custard base, but the 24-hour level freeze is what makes it spin smooth rather than in uneven patches.

  3. Spin: SMOOTHIE BOWL

Process on SMOOTHIE BOWL. On machines without that program, use LITE ICE CREAM, which handles dense fruit-and-yogurt bases the same way.

  4. Serve immediately in bowls and top while cold — a smoothie bowl has no shelf life once the paddle has aerated it.

  5. Top with granola, fresh banana slices, a drizzle of honey, or seeds, and eat with a spoon rather than drinking.

If it comes out crumbly: respin

If the first spin comes out too runny to hold toppings, RE-SPIN once — the paddle thickens the base as it aerates. If it is too thick to scoop, add 2 tbsp of milk and RE-SPIN once more.

Still icy after the respin? The icy-fix guide has all seven fixes.

Scaling to your machine

For the 24 oz Deluxe tub (NC501), multiply every ingredient by 1.5 and spin on SMOOTHIE BOWL — the Deluxe keeps every program the regular machine has, so use the same one. On the Scoop & Swirl (NC701) the same base spins on SMOOTHIE BOWL; SWIRL is unnecessary here, since you eat the bowl before it softens.

FAQ

What is the difference between a smoothie and a smoothie bowl?

Thickness and the utensil. A smoothie pours; a bowl holds its shape on a spoon and takes toppings. In practice that means less liquid in the base, frozen fruit rather than fresh, and a thickener such as oats or yogurt to carry it.

Can I make a smoothie bowl without a Ninja CREAMi?

Yes, in a blender with the tamper, using frozen banana and as little milk as the blades can take — but the result is usually gritty. The CREAMi's advantage is that it churns the frozen base with a paddle after the freeze, which is what makes the texture smooth rather than sandy.

How long do I have to freeze a smoothie bowl base?

The full 24 hours, the same as every other base in the catalog. Ninja's spec is a minimum of 24 hours on a level shelf, and a smoothie base is not exempt: it freezes through faster than a custard, but a short freeze leaves soft zones that shave unevenly. Blending ahead and freezing overnight is the convenient way to hit it.

What toppings work best?

Anything that contrasts the soft base: granola for crunch, fresh berries for acidity, honey or nut butter for richness, and toasted coconut or seeds for texture. Add them at the last moment, because the bowl starts melting the moment you pour it.
